SWG Construction and Sandwell Council Build Stronger Communities

SWG Construction has delivered a trio of impactful projects for Sandwell Council at Forge Mill Farm, Thorn Close in Wednesbury, and Whitgreave Crescent in West Bromwich, combining high-quality construction with a strong focus on local employment, sustainability, and social value.

As a long-standing partner of Sandwell Council, SWG continues to support the council’s key pillars: Employment & Skills, Community and School Engagement, Local Spend and Environmental Management ensuring every development leaves a lasting, positive impact.

We transformed an old barn into a vibrant indoor adventure and play space — now a welcoming hub for families and schools to learn and explore.

Two carpentry students from Sandwell College gained hands-on experience on site, while Tim, a local resident who started as a general labourer, is now employed as a telehandler driver across our Sandwell projects.

We invested over £640,000 with local suppliers within 20 miles radius and diverted nearly 960 tonnes of material from landfill through recycling and reuse.

This scheme involved the refurbishment of occupied apartment blocks and the construction of four new-build apartments, enhancing local housing and supporting social value through community-focused initiatives.

It created new opportunities for local residents, including Joshua and Ashley, who joined our Quantity Surveying and Buying teams, and Liam, who transitioned from agency work to full-time employment.

We supported St. Mary’s Church by donating refreshments for community coffee mornings and helped refurbish the church hall in collaboration with Painting and Decorating students from Sandwell College, giving them the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting.

Around £1.4 million was reinvested locally, and waste materials were responsibly recycled including timber pallets shared with nearby allotments.

This project saw the construction of six EPC A-rated semi-detached homes with associated external works, including gardens, parking, and landscaping.

Two plastering students from Sandwell College gained hands-on experience on site, while Tim who began his journey at Forge Mill Farm continued to play a key role.

We also upgraded Yew Tree & Tame Bridge Community Centre and partnered with NOVA Training to support Jayden, a local learner gaining practical experience through a multi-skills programme.

Over 30 local SME’s and suppliers were engaged, resulting in a total local spend being over £762,000 within 20 miles of the project.

Recycling and reuse remained central throughout, helping to minimise environmental impact.

Building Better Together

Shaun Humphries, Director at SWG Construction said: “At SWG Construction, our brand is built on community, sustainability, and meaningful impact. Working with Sandwell Council’s Social Value Commitments team reflects our commitment to delivering projects that not only meet expectations but elevate the communities we serve. We are proud to contribute to initiatives that strengthen our local impact and reinforce SWG’s reputation for responsible, sustainable, value-driven construction.”

Councillor Syeda Khatun MBE, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Business and Skills, said: “It’s great to see how these three projects, which all benefit people living in Sandwell, have also supported jobs, work experience and training opportunities for the local community. These experiences will be invaluable for everyone involved and will help people on their career paths. The social value benefits of these projects extend to our local supply chain and community facilities.

“We’ve recently launched our Sandwell Story with young people at the heart of our story, sharing their experiences and aspirations when it comes to Making It Sandwell. Providing the kind of opportunities these projects have created are all part of making the workforce of the future.”
