Building Spaces That Matter in Dolgellau

What if a building could change lives?
That is exactly what the new Dolfeurig Adult Learning Centre in Dolgellau is being designed to do.
Now under construction, this £3.9 million project will create new opportunities for adults with learning disabilities across the Meirionnydd area, providing training to support their first steps into work while promoting skill development, confidence and collaboration with the local community.
On site, progress continues at pace, with external brickwork underway for ramp and step access, alongside the installation of drainage and utility connections. Inside the building, first fix carpentry, electrical, plumbing and ventilation works are progressing, alongside fire protection installation and plasterboarding. Lightning protection, external doors and skylight fitting are also being installed.
The community in the Dolgellau area has already had a glimpse of the progress and ongoing development as work continues on site. Canolfan Dolfeurig has been an essential part of the Dolgellau community and surrounding area for generations and a recent engagement event provided an opportunity for Council officers to share the final plans for the new provision.
When complete, the centre will provide purpose-built spaces including:
- - Wood and craft workshops
- - A training kitchen
- - A sensory room with therapeutic waterbed
- - Clinical space to support collaboration with health services
- - A retail space selling products created by individuals attending the hub
- - A sensory garden and car wash
- - Fully accessible facilities throughout
Dolfeurig will also become a community hub, with a café, outdoor seating area, meeting rooms and a hall for local activities, creating a welcoming space for the wider community.

Councillor Dilwyn Morgan, Cyngor Gwynedd Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing, said:
“It was great to see so many from the community and service users calling in during the event to show an interest in the plans and hear more about the new centre. I am very happy to see a significant investment into a plan that is so important to the area. Maintaining hubs like these in our communities is a very important part of the ethos of the learning disabilities service, and I look forward to seeing the building opening officially. It will be an opportunity to celebrate and see service users, their families and the community using and enjoying the new innovative resources that will be here in Dolgellau.”
Councillor Dyfrig Siencyn, local member for Gogledd Dolgellau, added:
“Having a modern, purpose-built centre for individuals with learning disabilities in the heart of Dolgellau is something to be greatly welcomed. It means there will be a new accessible space with the latest resources available, which will serve as a focal point for the community today and for the future.”
Councillor Linda Morgan, Local Member for De Dolgellau, said:
“I was very pleased to have the opportunity to see the plans for Dolfeurig; they are very impressive, and I am looking forward to the completion and opening of the Centre. The service users and staff are excited and are looking forward to the Centre opening.
“Dolfeurig provides essential social, educational and therapeutic benefits, promoting independence and enhancing life skills such as cooking and communication. The Centre offers tailored, structured activities, personal care and therapeutic support to boost confidence and well-being. It provides a safe space to interact, build relationships, reduce loneliness and engage in arts and crafts, which are greatly enjoyed.
“The plans include community connections, such as the café, which is very important and a key source of support for service users and their families. Special thanks to all those involved in this excellent project.”
Shaun Humphries, SWG Construction Director, said:
“We are proud to be delivering the Dolfeurig project, a high-quality, purpose-built facility that meets the needs of the community. The centre will provide accessible spaces for learning, personal development and social interaction, creating opportunities for individuals to build confidence, gain skills and engage with the wider community in a welcoming and supportive environment.”
The development is led and partly funded by Cyngor Gwynedd, with additional support from the Welsh Government through the Health and Social Care Integration and Rebalancing Capital Fund (IRCF) and the Integrated Care Fund (ICF).
A fantastic project that will deliver real social value for the region. We look forward to sharing further progress as the centre continues to take shape.
The hub is anticipated to open later this year, with plans in progress for an official launch towards the end of summer 2026
